WWE Hell in a Cell 2017 highlights: Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon

Share

This has been arguably the best feud in the company in 2017.

Earlier, Shane attacked Kevin Owens before he even got inside the ring, starting the match outside the cage. This, needless to say, is not ideal. The match picked up near the end, but ended quite quickly once Orton hit the RKO.

Mahal is still WWE Champion. but what's next? What's the story?

As of last Tuesday, this was just supposed to be a match between AJ Styles and Baron Corbin. WWE managed to screw this build up in two different ways.

In a surprise, WWE added Tye Dillinger to the US Title match. At one point, Owens got McMahon onto an announce table and scaled the cell, appearing as though he'd jump off onto a battered McMahon.

The first match of the night came on the kick-off show when Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin faced The Hype Bros (Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder) in tag team action. In his last Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania 32, McMahon had an nearly identical bump.

The two men just gave us an incredibly formulaic affair that never got out of the first gear. The Usos beat the New Day to regain the Smackdown titles in the first ever tag match inside the structure. They set the tone early that they're not fucking around and they're here to hurt some people. Once obscure hardcore-fan-only promotions like Ring of Honor now draw a wide audience thanks to ubiquitous internet wrestling fandom, as do worldwide operations like New Japan Pro-Wrestling and hyper-stylized mold-breaking outfits like El Rey's Lucha Underground - all of which have carved into WWE's fanbase in by catering to elements like more extreme violence, technical-wrestling fundamentals and elaborate storylines that WWE's mass-appeal mandate has aimed to eschew. They go for the Midnight Hour early, but a thrown chair to the face thwarts that plan. Once the bell rang, McMahon went on the offensive.

The Sharpshooter was locked in soon after, but Charlotte was able to reverse it and hit a moonsault from the top rope to the outside of the ring. For better or for worse, he wouldn't cheat, he wouldn't do anything underhanded to get ahead. The Japanese was inching closer to a win as he landed his finishing move- The Kinshasa on Mahal's head.

Although he is not an active wrestler, he has competed in a number of classic matches over the years. Maybe not, but it was great.

The match began with The New Day and Usos brawling and in what felt instantly, the weapons began flying.

Dolph Ziggler's mockery of other superstars' entrances, which started a few weeks ago when he was officially "reintroduced" to the SmackDown audience (props to them, by the way, for being upfront with it as an introduction because Ziggler had been away from SmackDown for some time), was really only going to lead to one thing. Despite the commendable effort, the ending was meh. It feels like this feud has been going on forever.and it has.but the tag division on Smackdown isn't deep enough to experiment with other combinations.

WWE loves New Day though and it's hard to see them taking the titles from Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods since they're one of the most popular acts on SmackDown Live. Charlotte will get a rematch, and it might only be a matter of time before she's the SmackDown Women's Champion. This can end up being a more intense rivalry with revenge on Styles mind.

Greetings. This week, we'll candidly preview the WWE's upcoming pay per view - Hell in a Cell extravaganza.
