Baramulla: A close associate of Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief, founder Maulana Masood Azhar and Kashmiri's chief operational commander of Jaish-e-Mohammed, was killed in Rafiabad in an encounter with security forces.

Inspector general of police (Kashmir range) Muneer Khan has confirmed the news of Khalid's killing.

He termed Khalid's killing as a major jolt to Jaish and militancy in the State. After brief exchange of gunfire, Khalid was killed. The police carried out search operations in the Ladoora area upon receiving information about various militants being present in the area. He was involved in the killing of Fayaz Ahmad Rather, resident of Saidpora Rafiaabad near his home. "The killed militant is Khalid alias Khalid Bhai, the Jaish chief in Kashmir who was behind all the recent fidayeen attacks, " Khan told the Hindustan Times.

Identified as Khalid, he was the operational head and master mind of the attack on the BSF camp attack.

"He was also involved in fidayeen attack on army camp at Khwajabagh, Baramulla past year".

Meanwhile, militants attacked a patrol party of army at Drang village of Khag in central Kashmir's Budgam district last night. The search operation converted into a gun battle as militants started to fire towards the search party.

"He was killed in a joint operation by the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Special Operation Group, local police, the CRPF and the Army", he said.

The Pakistani national known only as Khalid was trapped in a house after throwing a grenade at a police checkpoint in the northern village of Ladoora, they said.

Media reports suggest that it was a tip-off from a jilted lover of Khalid that helped the security forces trace and neutralise him.
