Akhilesh, who is set to be re-elected as the SP national chief for a five-year term, was asked to comment on his feuding uncle's reported congratulatory phone call. This was later followed with Akhilesh meeting his father during which Mulayam is believed to have advised him to take older party members along with him. The convention is slated to pass its political resolution during the day. But even these rumours are also likely to be washed out, as, Akhilesh meet his father personally in Lucknow last week to extend an invitation for the conventions.

Speaker after speaker, including Akhilesh, referred to the absence of Mulayam from the event.

Shivpal congratulated his nephew in advance for getting re-elected as the party's national president at the executive meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday. "Everyone would have liked it (his presence)", said Akhilesh, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, in his address.

Thursday's unopposed re-election gives him absolute control over the party for upcoming elections, thus further sidelining his father and uncle Shivpal Yadav. The meeting also amended the party constitution to increase the term of the President to five years from the present three.

"We have to save the party".

"I have got the benefit of my age and our relation".

SP sources said that a section of the party was trying to broker a truce in the SP family and persuade Shivpal to accept Akhilesh's leadership in exchange for the post of general secretary.

In fact, Mulayam was missed so much that rumours kept floating till the eleventh hour that he will be turning up any time. Ramgopal had proposed his name.

"Netaji will remain leader of all the socialists". "Ashirvaad netaji ne bhi diya hai aur main phir maangta hun (Netaji has given me his blessings but I have still requested him)".

Rejecting the stand of the Mulayam Singh Yadav camp, the election body said there is a clear split in the party.

Previously, both Mulayam and his younger brother Shivpal Singh Yadav were not invited to the party's 8th state party convention in Lucknow on September 23.
