Lynx win fourth WNBA title

The best-of-five series began in Minnesota, where the Sparks claimed game one and the Lynx won game two.

Reeve's trademark ferocity dissipated and she began to cry.

"I wasn't nervous at all at the end", Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve sarcastically told ESPN through a laugh. "I don't know exactly what the timing was, but with 20-some seconds left (in the game), we're down three". I'm not easy to be around.

In accepting the Finals MVP trophy after scoring 17 points and pulling down a season-high 20 rebounds, Fowles recalled Game 5 a year ago, when she missed a rebound that allowed the Sparks to make the final shot and win the title. The win left the series to exactly the point where Minnesota lost the title previous year - an ending Lynx guard Seimone Augustus said on Sunday she wanted to change. Fowles, the league MVP, went for 22 points and 14 rebounds to help the Lynx to a 48-28 rebounding advantage.

None of the Lynx's four championships have come consecutively. Perhaps more impressive, with a win the Sparks would become the first team to win back-to-back titles since they did it in 2001-02 when L.A. was led by Lisa Leslie. "They're so special. I just can't even impart to you how special this group is".

As far as the Los Angeles Sparks, there's no doubt that based on the star power this team features, that they'll be back again.

The Lynx looked to have things in control when Augustus's jumper gave them a 79-67 lead that lasted until Jantel Lavender's layup with 90 seconds to go. "I hope so, unless ya'll know something I don't know", Brunson jokingly said when asked about her plans for returning for what would be 15th season in 2018.

Minnesota looked balanced on offense on Sunday to emphasize Fowles while still running some of their favorite screening actions to free up Moore and Augustus.

There are also plenty of promising young players to watch for in the future including #San Antonio's Kelsey Plum, Dallas' Allisha Gray, and Atlanta's Brittney Sykes. Moore signed a multi-year deal in 2015.

"I'll take time to think about it; it's not something I've really thought about", Beard said of the 2018 season.

"It's no secrets. There's not a play we're going to call tomorrow that they won't know". Lindsay Whalen, the Minnesota Lynx's point guard, heaved a shot from the backcourt but it was too late-the Sparks had won it all. Yet this Lynx team hardly lost a step this season, boasting the best record in the regular-season before celebrating a championship with a parade Thursday.

"You don't want anybody out there that can't perform because of fatigue", Reeve said.

While the NBA mandates that its players stand for the national anthem, commissioner Adam Silver did not commit to fining players for protesting when the new season starts this month, saying only "we'll deal with it when it happens".

It was a total team effort in this year's Game 5 that led to the title returning to Minnesota. And so it takes a toll on you. This isn't a case where we're surprising people.
