Necrotizing fasciitis is a bacterial skin infection that afflicts muscles and connective tissues, then spreads throughout the body, leading to organ failure and death if left untreated.
The Houston Chronicle reported that Nancy Reed, 77, of Houston, contracted a risky bacterial skin infection after she fell into dirty floodwater in her son's home, breaking and cutting open her arm.
"This is one of the things we'd been worrying about once the flooding began, that something like this might occur", says the director of the city's emergency medical services. "My heart goes out to the family". The kind of microbes was not recognized in the post-mortem report, but rather streptococcus A, klebsiella, clositrium, E. coli, staphylococcus aureus and aeromonas hydrophila are among the sorts of microorganisms that can cause necrotizing fasciitis and can be found in floodwaters, as indicated by the government Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "And we're going to miss her".
The CDC says since 2010 about 700 to 1,100 cases have been reported each year in the United States.
But they are required to report numerous organisms that cause the disease - streptococcus, E. coli, vibrio vulnificus and some types of drug-resistant staphylococcus.
Following hurricanes that have hit the United States and surrounding islands, the CDC released a fact sheet on hurricane safety, warning: "Be careful with floodwater - it can contain risky bacteria".
The woman caught the infection after falling into bacteria-infested floodwaters.
Good wound care like keeping open wounds clean and covered is key to preventing skin infections.
The CDC says the infection is rare, but if contracted, it can be deadly in a very short amount of time. People can also feel tired and develop a fever and chills.
