Cairo Santos placed on IR

Throughout preseason and camp the competition among both kickers was intense.

Butker, who was a seventh-round selection out of Georgia Tech, was bidding with Graham Gano for the Panthers' kicking job. Butker was signed to the Panthers squad following being cut from the team's 53-man roster during their final cuts. Over his four-year career at Georgia Tech, Butker was 43-of-60 and only missed two of his 210 extra point attempts. He was selected in the seventh round of the National Football League draft by the Panthers.

The Los Angeles Chargers were penalized for roughing the kicker against Chiefs and Santos on his 51-yard field goal that went wide left in Sunday's game.

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed fourth-year kicker Cairo Santos on injured reserve and have signed rookie kicker Harrison Butker off the Carolina Panthers' practice squad, the team announced Tuesday. Scouts saw Butker's big leg, however. "The past three seasons, I had made big kicks, but I hadn't put together a good season".

"My senior season, I wanted to show teams I could be accurate", Butker told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Panthers held on to Butker entering the regular season, hoping to find a buyer for the rookie or Gano. Connor Barth took over kicking duties during the 2008 season.
