Officials praised the quick reaction of a high school teacher who subdued a gun-wielding student inside the Mattoon High School cafeteria after "numerous rounds" were fired Wednesday morning, injuring at least two students.
Police are hailing a math and PE teacher who helped defuse a school shooting at an eastern IL high school Wednesday.
One student was shot, but is in stable condition, following a shooting at Mattoon High School Wednesday. Angela McQueen, a teacher, and a school resource officer headed to the cafeteria to investigate.
In a message on the District 304 website on Wednesday morning, officials said students should, "come prepared to have bags and ID's checked". She said a bullet grazed his knuckles and caused them to bust open, but he is physically fine otherwise.
CCSD police detained the student shortly after. Buses are also being sent to the school for students who normally ride the bus home and those students will be released as well.
